Location
Surrounded by the typical Tuscan landscape made of hills covered with olive groves, the villa is in Valdinievole, just a few kilometres from Montecatini Terme.
The small town in the province of Pistoia was the object of a long struggle between Florence and the other Tuscan towns (mainly Arezzo, Lucca, Pisa and Siena). In 1554 the Sienese army occupied Montecatini without meeting strong resistance. After having re-conquered the town, the Florentine laid it waste; only a few buildings survived their fury.
The curative properties of Montecatini waters were already renowned in the past, and the first thermal facilities were built in 1530. The thermal baths that can be admired today, however, were built only in the second half of the 18th century, at the end of the reclamation works ordered by Grand Duke Leopold.
Thanks to its baths, Montecatini has become one of the most popular Italian thermal towns. Between the late 19th century and the early 20th century famous Italian artists and writers visited Montecatini, including Giuseppe Verdi, Luigi Pirandello, Pietro Mascagni and Beniamino Gigli.
