Location
The farmhouse is located near Pisa, on the hills that separate Galileo Galilei's hometown from the province of Lucca.
An ancient maritime republic like Amalfi, Genoa and Venezia, Pisa is renowned mainly for its Leaning Tower and the so-called Piazza dei Miracoli (a name coined by the Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio in praise of its rare beauty). However, the Tower, the Duomo, the Baptistery and the Monumental Cemetery are only just a part of the monuments that should be visited in Pisa. Less renowned is Piazza dei Cavalieri, with the Palazzo dell'Orologio, the so-called Torre della Fame (Ugolino della Gherardesca's prison), the Palazzo della Carovana and the church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri. Apart from the most famous one, in Pisa there are two more leaning towers: those of the churches of San Nicola and San Michele degli Scalzi, in Borgo Stretto.
The palaces of the ancient aristocratic families flank the Lungarno Mediceo, whereas on Lungarno Gambacorti stands the charming church of Santa Maria della Spina.
Every year, on the evening of June 16th, San Ranieri's eve, Pisa sparkles with the light of 100,000 small lamps: spellbinding! Moreover, every fourth year between the end of May and the beginning of July Pisa hosts the Palio delle Repubbliche Marinare, a competition involving the boats of the four ancient maritime republics.
