Discover Chianti by Bicycle
This land is so well suited for viticulture, as well as for cycling!! In Gaiole there is the " Associazione Parco Ciclistico del Chianti " (= Chianti Cycling Park Association), which every year at the end of September organizes a great event: the " Eroica "(= the race of the heroes). This is a quite special race, with routes of different lengths, for amateurs and professionals, in which one participates only with "vintage bikes" and themed clothing. On the occasion of "Eroica", the whole Gaiole steps back in time: artisans, blacksmiths and shoemakers return to the streets, there are exhibitions of historic bicycle races and parades of old cars and motorcycles across the main streets. A wonderful and suggestive sight really!!
A special thank goes to the members of the Chianti Cycling Park Association also for writing the detailed Bicycle Touring Guide of Chianti (=Guida Cicloturistica del Chianti) published by "New Image Editrice". This beautiful guide contains the description of 20 cycling routes in Chianti, through the towns of Castellina, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Gaiole, Greve and Radda, providing all relevant information; maps, elevations, slopes, distances and points of interest along the routes.
In English and German the “Cycling Atlas of Tuscany” is also available. It is a very well done book, with many cycling tours through the whole Tuscany, published by " Esterbauer Verlag ". Here too, detailed maps of routes and beautiful photos accompany the precious indications of the authors.
Anyway, if you enjoy the company of other people on holiday, and you don’t like the "do-it-yourself", you can smoothly rely on professionals. There are many agencies specialized in organizing bike tours in Chianti. We point out just a couple of sites to give you an idea of the variety and multiplicity of choice that this beautiful corner of the world offers with respect to difficulty, length and type of routes. But they are not the only ones...
