Florentine Trattorias - Osterias - Wine Shops - Trippaios and Florentine Restaurants
Florentines do not always eat in classical restaurants. In fact, they often choose to have lunch in one of the numerous and less expensive
trattorias or
osterias.
There is no clear distinction between
trattorias and
osterias: both are family businesses serving the simple and genuine Tuscan dishes. Maybe the only difference lays in the fact that
osterias do not offer as wide a menu as
trattorias. Traditionally, the popular quarter of Oltrarno is one of the most rich in
osterias and
trattorias, as if to underline the inexpensiveness of this kind of restaurants.
Wine shops can be divided into
enotecas and
fiaschetterias.
Enotecas offer a wide and refined selection of wines to be tasted with some appetizers. Florentine
fiaschetterias are cheap wine shops where to eat sandwiches.
Florence is scattered with
trippaios selling their sandwiches filled with tripe or
lampredotto (a particular kind of tripe) and a spicy sauce.
