Holidays in Val d`Orcia
In this travel guide to Siena could not be missing a page dedicated to the
Val d`Orcia. Included in the list of UNESCO`s World Heritage Sites since 2004, this corner of Tuscany made of bright-green gentle hills, dark-green cypresses, neat and tidy vineyards and cereal fields stretches between Siena and Grosseto. The region is divided into the small but picturesque municipalities of
Montalcino,
Castiglione,
San Quirico,
Pienza and
Radicofani.
Renting a farmhouse or a villa in the province of Siena , possibly in the Val d`Orcia, will therefore mean spending one or more weeks in close contact with nature, in a land rich in
enogastronomic treasures (including the Brunello di Montalcino, the pecorino cheese, the pici...), among other things.
Indeed, this part of the province of Siena is also rich in
art treasures: from the fortress that dominates Montalcino to the Abbey of Sant`Antimo, from Palazzo Piccolomini to the cathedral of Pienza, from Palazzo degli Avignonesi to Piazza Grande in Montepulciano.
Surrounded by
breathtaking landscapes, the villas immersed in the countryside in this corner of Tuscany, are often the result of the skilful renovation of ancient cottages or farmhouses where the peasants used to live with their large families.
Last but least, do not forget that this area has been renowned since the Etruscan and Roman ages for its
many warm thermal springs: relaxation and well-being will be the most important ingredients of your holidays in Siena and in the Val d`Orcia.
