Crete Senesi and Truffle

The landscape of the Crete Senesi is probably the most amazing landscape you can see during your holidays in Tuscany: a bare landscape mainly made of biancane (white modest hills) and calanchi (a kind of troughs in the hillside).

In the Middle Ages this peculiar landscape south of Siena was called desert of Accona and today to many tourists it brings to mind the images of the moon landscape seen in books and on TV.

The Crete Senesi district stretches between the provinces of Arezzo and Siena and composes of the municipalities of Rapolano Terme (renowned for the Terme Antica Querciaiola); Asciano (where every September takes place a donkey race called Palio dei Ciuchi); Buonconvento (one of the most beautiful villages in Italy); San Giovanni d`Asso (which hosts a museum dedicated to truffle); and Monteroni d`Arbia (whose countryside is dotted with parish churches).

Looking for an apartment in a holiday farm or a farmhouse in this corner of Tuscany for your next holidays in Siena means browsing the ads for holiday rentals in Siena concerning carefully renovated accommodation facilities that have maintained their original rustic style.

Moreover, the Crete Senesi region is an excellent holiday destination for those who like food-and-wine tourism: this is the land of the Pecorino di Pienza cheese, the Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino, the Nobile di Montepulciano and the pici... but in autumn and winter feasts and events are dedicated to truffle.
