Grapevine is a major crop in this part of Tuscany, and the vineyards usually lie near the farmhouses, whereas the olive groves, fields and pastures lie farther away. Further distinctive features of the landscape are the slender cypress trees that edge the narrow country roads and the driveways to the estates. Chestnut, holm-oak and oak woods cover the hilltops.
The weather in Chianti is good most of the year. From April to October rainfall is limited, and the fresh hilly breezes mitigate the summer`s sultry heat. Spring is the season of blossoming trees, and white, rose and yellow sweet-smelling patches dot the landscape, whereas the vivid colours of the vineyards and woods characterize the landscape in autumn.
Tourists usually remain spellbound by this charming countryside. Many of the foreigners who went to Chianti on holiday have decided to remain there. That is the reason why the area is playfully called "Chiantishire"...
