Chianti Rufina: Produced on the Hills North-East of Florence
The Rufina region is one of the smallest Chianti sub-zones, in fact it covers little more than 12,000 acres; but its rainy winters and warm, dry and windy summers, and the very good diurnal range of temperature favour the optimal ripening of grapes. Moreover, the particular soil conditions help the refinement of the wine.
Wines are often described using adjectives that are usually referred to people; also, it is undeniably true that the territory and the climate influence both the inhabitants of a region and the wine produced there. Think about those who live in the mountains (the Chianti Rufina region lies at the foot of the Apennines...): strong people, peevish and distrustful at first but then welcoming and open. The same could be said of the Chianti Rufina, even though a similar description may outrage sommeliers, with their refined vocabulary! At first the Chianti Rufina is a bit "peevish", but with a little bit of patience, you will surely appreciate its structure and its elegant bouquet and aromas.
